Upcoming gigs

prog folk songwriters - PillowfishPillowfish are:
Tom Drinkwater: vocal, 10-string bouzouki, guitar, bass, cello, mandolin
Helen Bell: viola, 5-string viola, violin, backing vocal, organ, synths, recorder

Pillowfish can be loosely described as a progressive folk band, in both the old and modern senses of the phrase: they aim to incorporate both a progressive political message – as in the original meaning of ‘progressive folk’ dating from 1930s America – and elements of the 1960s UK-based ‘prog folk’ movement which was a forerunner to prog rock. Some of their major influences from these movements are Bob Dylan, Jethro Tull and the Incredible String Band, although this is by no means an exclusive list.

Pillowfish aim to:

  • Create original music, ideally saying something that has not been said before, or taking a different angle on something that has.
  • Make the listener think – even in cases in which the listener does not necessarily agree with the sentiments expressed in the music.
  • Seek new ways of performing live music through new and developing technology, such as broadcasting over the web through media such as Second Life and Ustream
